Less Wimpys, More Popeyes, Please.

For anyone familiar with Popeye cartoons, or even the film version with Robin Williams as Popeye, Wimpy is known by his signature phrase, “I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.”

The problem is the particular Tuesday never arrives. There will always be another Tuesday he meant. What’s more, anyone following the character closely will also note that Wimpy is great at cooking up cockamamie schemes that usually fall apart and which someone else typically has to clean up. He’s a great guy to have as a friend… until the going gets rough. Then he’s apt to leave you hanging when you need him most. Moral terpitude is not his strong point.

Popeye, on the other hand, is, “I am what I am.” What he “am’s” is someone with distinct beliefs of right and wrong who refuses to compromise his principles, even at the exhortations of his great true love, Olive Oil, who isn’t known for being a steadfast lover, often playing Popeye against Brutus in a weird but chaste love triangle.

Thus, we have the political scene in our nation’s capitol and, truth to be told, much of the rest of the country as well. I’ll leave you to decide who fits what character although I’ll leave you one hint: There’s a dirth of Popeyes.

Of course there are a few other characters who might fit some few, Alice the Goon, Sweetpea, Eugene, The Sea Hag, and of course, the ultimate bad guy/bully, Brutus.

Whomever whom fits, there is still a dirth of Popeyes and if ever we needed more Popeyes, the time is now.
