Don’t Count Romney Out
I’m very confused by media coverage of Mitt Romney. He is held to an incredible achievement standard, and what he does achieve goes unrecognized. To hear FOX news or any major outlet, Romney is on the ropes. Here’s the delegate count after last night’s election results:
Romney 17
Huckabee 12
Thompson 8
McCain 5
I understand that national polls are all over the map, so in what universe is John McCain the frontrunner? The NH Independents universe. Will those independents vote for him when the choice is democrat or republican in the general election in November? That’s anyone’s guess and hardly substantive rock solid support. OTOH Romney’s voters are solid, and many FredHeads make Romney their next choice. If all conservatives are to turn out in the next election the choice is between those two. I know Huck Huck Huck who is a social conservative counts himself as a conservative. When he allows amnesty and raises taxes and pardons felons will we still believe him? His record is spotty at best. The other fly in the ointment - the fiscal conservatives will throw down the gauntlet and even if Hillary is the democrat candidate they won’t vote for Huck. The same is said about McCain from many of us who have never sat out an election - we will this time if he is the candidate. That eliminates them from contention right there. They might as well be John Ron Paul McCain and Mike Ron Paul Huckabee.
Captain’s Quarters argues that the Hillary win was great news for conservatives. Far be it from me to argue with someone I admire as much as I do Captain Ed, but his construct has a gaping hole. Voting against someone is not nearly the motivator that voting for someone is. If the GOP has a divisive candidate, there will be a democrat in the White House, and as it is going, her name will be Hillary. Bush Clinton Bush Clinton. Trump that.
The GOP had better wake up and stop listening to the lying talking heads. Turnout has always been the key. If republicans are hoping the aversion factor will operate to turnout voters, then they forget entirely the results of 2006. Thinking like that got us a Democrat held Congress.
Meanwhile the MSM and FOX are playing taps for Romney and pretending Fred doesn’t exist. Romney is in the lead in the metric that matters, that which determines who gets the nomination, THE NUMBER OF DELEGATES. How is it they miss that? Do they believe that national polls are reflective of something? We are a republic; someone needs to tell the pundits.
Tom Brokaw says the public is going to judge the punditry - too late. They have already been weighed in the balance and found wanting. So what do they do? They hit bottom and start digging by asking the question “When will Mitt Romney drop out?” Are they insane? RDS (Romney Derangement Syndrome) hinges on his stance against illegal immigration and his strength in the national election. McCain and Huck will not bring in their own party, nor will they entice enough moderates to compensate, thereby ushering in complete Democrat control. They appeal to the media for just those reasons. They want us to ignore Romney’s lead in the delegate count.
He has more delegates than Clinton or Obama. Romney is currently the candidate with the most delegates heading into his birthstate of Michigan. Don’t count him out no matter what the media tells you.

McCain is the media “flavor of the week”. Next week it will be somebody else. The media is not our friend. The more people really begin to realize that, the more people will vote their conscience rather than according to the latest poll.
Michigan is a very liberal state, which is crazy considering the damage the state has taken in recent years… but then we have never credited liberals with a whole lot of sense have we? They credit themselves enough for three people. However, that will be Romney’s biggest hurdle in that state.

Kathy - excellent take. Two states do not a president make.
I just explained the electoral college to my sister-in-law this morning. I should have added something about delegates, too.
My wife advocates primaries all on one day.
Me, well, I don’t know. MO is part of Super Tuesday, and we have an open primary. Usually I take the Dem ballot, but I haven’t decided yet. I probably will after South Carolina.

Mo, as our resident expert on all things political, what do you make of this?
Wyoming

Stephanie - makes absoluetly no sense, and it seems that a lot of people in Wyoming think so too!

I’m amazed at the disconnect between the press hype of the apparent “winners” of both parties and the actual delegate totals.
I am in agreement that the process should be changed to occur nationally in one day.

Mo, TN is part of Super Tuesday, too. Unfortunately, I would look askance at any results from here. Davidson County and Wackenhut just let loose 337,000 voters’ information… that will be up for grabs, including social security numbers. Just because the theft occurred here in Nashville doesn’t mean it’s not a problem with a much wider reach, considering there’s still a month before the primary elections… not to mention the other typical problems that usually occur with identity theft. I expect my vote to show up in a lot of different places, although only one of them will really be me.
Is my vote even going to count? Who’s to say that the fraud’s vote will go through while mine won’t? The government hasn’t answered anything on that score, yet, if they ever will.

The media everywhere are like small children now, they live in the moment, when something happens, they’re all excited and blathering on, but they are easily distracted and soon move to next event. I say do the homework, make the time to check the candidates out and make a decision and stick with it unless he/she does something really crazy. Otherwise you’ll just fall for the best spinners.
