Random Blogging Thoughts Part 21

One. “Sen. Barack Obama today chided his Democratic presidential rivals for vehemently opposing the Iraq war after initially voting to authorize it, contending real leaders don’t get any ‘do-overs’ on an issue as monumental as war.”
– July 7 Chicago Tribune

Via Instapundit, who says simply, “He’s right.” I totally agree. Well played.

Two. Zimbabwe is in such dire straights that there are some begging England to invade to get rid of the commie Mugabe. The government has ordered food, gas and other goods to be sold below cost, which has created a massive black market. But mostly, gas stations are empty, markets are empty and people are getting very desperate.

All because of Robert Mugabe, socialist hero and racist thug who totally wrecked what was a thriving country before he took over.

Three. BDS right-wing style: Michelle Malkin has BDS syndrome bad. I’d even go so far as to say she’s jumped the shark, for she’s one of the leaders of the latest round of Bush bashing. This time, it’s over a comment the president made, or rather, how he made a remark, in response to a question from a 13-year-old girl. The original Washington Times story says:

A question for President Bush on immigration rose up like a ghost from the grave this afternoon in Ohio.

Only the questioner was a 13-year old blonde-headed girl, Jessica Hackerd, from Brecksville, Ohio, who immediately broke into tears after making her inquiry.

“Mr. President, I know immigration has been a big problem in the U.S. And what is your next step with the immigration bill?” Jessica asked Mr. Bush, during a question and answer period after a speech Mr. Bush gave to a Cleveland business group.

Mr. Bush’s sarcastic reply — a wry “yeah, thanks” — drew laughter from the crowd of 400. But the attention caused young Jessica, who characterized herself in an interview afterward as very shy, to immediately tear up.

“No, it’s a great question. No, I appreciate that,” Mr. Bush said, as he saw Jessica’s reaction.

…Mr. Bush went on to speak more than 1,100 words about the death of his proposed comprehensive immigration reform, which was a heavy blow when it fell apart last month. But Jessica, there with her parents and younger sister, continued to wipe tears from her eyes for several minutes, and midway through his answer, Mr. Bush again tried to encourage the distraught youngster without drawing too much attention to her.

Malkin’s reaction? “Do you think there’s anyone in the White House who might possibly realize that it’s precisely this flippant attitude that has turned off so many grass-roots conservatives and eroded the president’s political capital when he needs it the most?”

Even John Hawkins at his Conservative Grapevine site fell for it, as his headline for Malkin’s post reads: “Michelle Malkin: President Bush’s sarcastic answer to a 13 year-old girl who asked him an immigration question makes her cry. (Jerk)”

Oh, good grief. Do either of them recognize that the president’s wry “yeah, thanks” was self-deprecating, something Bush does quite regularly, and that maybe, quite probably, a 13-year-old girl asking a question of the president was probably under just a wee little bit of stress and anxiety, and she burst into tears not from what Bush said, but from the crowd’s laughter?

Sheesh. That’s the kind of crap we’ve come to expect from the hard left, not the right. Sister Toldjah agrees with me, too. (Or I agree with her.)

Four. Bill Kristol says that there’s no real reason why we should all be so unhappy:

“Have events in general gone better or worse than most people would have predicted on Sept. 12, 2001? There’s been no successful second attack here in the U.S.—and very limited terrorist successes in Europe or even in the Middle East. We’ve had 5 ½ years of robust economic growth, low unemployment and a stock-market recovery. Social indicators in the U.S. are mostly stable or improving—abortions, teenage births and teenage drug use are down and education scores are up a bit. It may well be that no other country has ever been stronger than the U.S. today—and it may well be that no other people in human history have ever had it quite so good.”

I wonder: except for Iraq, which is still being played out, and the illegal immigration imbroglio, deep down do people hate Bush because he’s successful at most everything else and doesn’t care what they think about him? Just a thought.

Five. “It can be said that Katrina, like lynching, not only destroyed the work of generations in a single day, but is resulting in a deliberate effort to dispossess black landholders.”
–racist-in-chief Julian Bond, head of the NAACP

You can say it, you bigot, but that doesn’t make it true, and it never will.

Bond truly lives in a fantasyland of his own making. Unfortunately, too many people accept what he says as the absolute truth.

Hi Big Mo. Thanks for the link. By the way, I really admire your unswerving loyalty to GWB. I believe it’s one of the strengths of the American people that they stand behind the Commander in Chief (at least they always have in days gone by).
    Keep up the great blogging!

Aurora - thanks, and you’re welcome!

I wouldn’t call it unswerving, though, as we definitely do have our disagreements (the illegal immigration bill, for one).

He’s done many, many things I support, but some things that make me say, “huh?!?”

Overall, though, I still support him (though not as strongly as before) and it’s largely because of the war and what he’s already accomplished — and because of asinine attacks on him as I noted here.

Thank you. I am also getting pretty tired of the garbage coming out of conservative bloggers about George Bush. Yesterday this story about the 13 yr. old girl was way over the top. Oh and also over the limit was the comment from L. Barber on her blog - “Bush really is an idiot”. Congratulations, these comments prove that conservatives are willing to stoop to the same low level as our friends on the left. Perhaps we could have a Daily Harry Reid Award - for the most insulting and degrading comment about the President. I am out of GW’s camp on immigration - but still firmly on his side for the rest. I will not donate to the Republican Party - but it’s not because of Bush. I still think he is a good man, and is trying to do the best for us. He is still hands above any Democrat running this year. We have too many RINO’s that are more worried about the next election than the safety and future of America.

Nancy - Thanks. I like La Shawn and her writings a lot, but I skip over her stuff when she goes on a tear about “King George.”

Thanks so much for your blog. I tried to respond to Ms. Malkin’s post, but I couldn’t remember my password. I did post something similar to your own thoughts on two of the sites that tracked back to her blog.

I’m afraid that many ‘conservative’ journalists and bloggers are going to be very unhappy at the result of the 2008 election, and may not realize they have no one but themselves to blame. More and more of them continue to jump on the “Blame Bush” bandwagon, and their reasons often seem spurious to me. Loyalty and good manners have been abandoned for political correctness, and the conservative politicians, along with their constituents, are going to pay the price.

Thanks for this more balanced perspective of the events. I agree 100% with Nancy!
