Updates From the Pelican State

Where is MFG when we need him?

Jim Addison from Wizbang Politics has been doing a bang-up job of following developments in the race for governor of the state of Louisiana. He reported the other day that former Louisiana Democratic Senator and resident of Maryland, John Breaux, has decided not to run for governor. And he’s most recently reported here that Michael Landrieu, brother of Senator Mary and current Lt. Governor will not run either. This leaves Democrats without a candidate with big name recognition and perhaps paves the way for Republican Bobby Jindal to become the next governor.

I meant to send you an update or an E mail, sorry I have been very, very busy at work

Attorney General Charles Foti (remember I told you he had a reputation for being a fair guy) refused to rule on whether or not Breaux could run, deferring the issue to the courts.

Breaux looked at the polling data and the fact that Bobby J had raised $5,000,000 already, and concluded that this race could not be won in ever-reddening Louisiana

    Hurray!!

No one now has any chance against the Jindal Juggernaut.

Some poor hapless schmuck will play the role of Democrat-to-be-Annihilated-
in-the-first-primary but this race is OVER, barring a miracle

Bobby Jindal will be the next Governor of Louisiana

A fine man, a brilliant man, a family man who is very conservative and staunchly pro-life!!

Watch this man, he may be President one day…

  2. MFG Says:

The upshot is that Breaux not being a state resident was playing VERY BADLY down here.

I think Foti gave Breaux a dignified way to withdraw by refusing to issue a decision.

Had Breaux run it was becoming more and more clear that he would have been humiliated in a “Where the hell were you when we needed you?” election landslide debacle

And who wants to end a long, distinguished political career like that?

  3. MFG Says:

The burning question now is: who will be the Republican nominee for the Senate against Mary Landrieu?

By far, Landrieu is THE most vulnerable Democrat up for re-election in 2008.

Some of the more high profile possible candidates:

Former Governor Mike Foster - better than Landrieu and an honest man, but he is a RINO

Woody Jenkins - Landrieu stole the first election from him in 1996 when she “won” her first term. He is VERY conservative but the feeling most people have is that his time has passed

State Treasurer John Kennedy - currently a Democrat but the rumors will not stop that he will change parties and run as a Republican against Landrieu. He is moderately conservative and would be a good choice, IF he runs

it will be interesting to see what happens going forward…

One of the things that is very hard to analyze for non-Louisianians is that party affiliation means very little down here.

There are almost no moonbat type Democrats down here, because there is almost no community where people like that can be elected

Someone can be a Democrat, like John Kennedy, and really be pretty much a conservative while someone can be a Republican like Mike Foster and be something of a RINO and a disappointment to conservatives

In short, it’s very difficult if not impossible sometimes for outsiders to tell whether or not someone is conservative just by looking at their party registration

Frankly, some Democrats stay Democrats just to retain the Black vote. Not all, but some..

    Cynical, yes, but…

In a dreadful week for news there were at least two great things to happen:

The Partial Birth Abortion Ban being upheld and

Bobby Jindal will win the Governor’s race here in LA

Two things at least to be VERY thankful and grateful for

  6. MFG Says:

I’m proud of Louisiana that we didn’t create some Torricelli type joke situation where someone could run for public office when he clearly wasn’t qualified to do so

Things ARE getting better down here, there IS less corruption down here and this is a good development all around

And give Charles Foti some credit . He must have been under TREMENDOUS pressure to cave since only Breaux had a chance to win the seat for the Democrats.

He did the right thing when the easiest thing in the world would have been to allow Breaux to run…

  7. MFG Says:

Hopefully Bobby will now win a smashing victory against the sacrificial lamb Democrat-to be-named-later and win a real mandate to turn this state around!!

  8. MFG Says:

And who were these people who thought Mitch Landrieu could be elected Governor?

Not a chance, none, zero, nada

My cat will be elected Governor before Mitch Landrieu will…

  9. MFG Says:

Looks like Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell is going to be the designated Democrat-to-be-destroyed in the primary

I think there are maybe 12 people in the state who know who he is

I wonder what the filing fees are for Governor?

If I ran my cat against Foster Campbell, who knows, maybe we could get more votes than him…

  10. COgirl Says:

Thanks for the update, MFG. I knew you’d have the inside story.

Very interesting about the party affiliation not meaning squat. The problem in the race for Senator is how the state aligns to determine control of the Senate. Not that voters necessarily think about that anywhere, but I do, as do readers here.

  11. MFG Says:

Landrieu is likeable which counts for a lot down here, but she is WAY too liberal for this state, especially on abortion, which Louisianians detest, by and large

Conventional wisdom (which I agree with):
A good candidate takes her out, as her New Orleans base has been halved in size

  12. COgirl Says:

I hope the GOP comes up with a good candidate. This is probably the best chance we have to pick up a seat in 2008. What I fear is that Colorado will give up a seat with Wayne Allard announcing that he won’t seek re-election. Not that it was a slam dunk for him anyway, but I see that as a vulnerable seat.
