Democrats Approve Surrender Date

By 6 votes, and along party lines (more or less), the Democrats approved the Iraq war funding bill that included pork for the supporters and and a pullout date for the troups.

Ignoring a White House veto threat, lawmakers voted 218-212, mostly along party lines, for a binding war spending bill requiring that combat operations cease before September 2008, or earlier if the Iraqi government does not meet certain requirements. Democrats said it was time to heed the mandate of their election sweep last November, which gave them control of Congress.

Voting for the bill were 216 Democrats and two Republicans — Wayne Gilchrest (news, bio, voting record) of Maryland and Walter Jones (news, bio, voting record) of North Carolina. Of the 212 members who opposed the bill, 198 were Republicans and 14 were Democrats.

They don’t have the numbers to override a certain Bush veto. Shame on the 216 chickens who voted to support the terrorists with their votes.

Story, here.

UPDATE Here’s a link to the voting, Surrender vote.

    I posted this on Wednesday:

“Because of the 2006 election, Bush has no “mandate” to “escalate” the war in Iraq”

Only someone completely ignorant of the Constitution would utter something as stupid as this. President Bush was given full authority by Congress in October 2002 to take military action against Iraq. This authority has not been rescinded. Let’s review the Constitution, shall we?

The Congress has the authority to declare war and authorize the executive to use force. The Congress (the House) also has the authority to allocate money in support of military operations. The executive (the president) has the authority and power to execute war; he decides where military forces are sent and how long they stay. He acts on the advice of his entire staff, which includes the Department of Defense, and his generals in the field.

That’s it. Nowhere does the Constitution give the people, or the media, or the Congress the authority to wage war. Only the president. The “will of the people” in time of war is immaterial as far as the waging of the war is concerned. The people may convince the Congress to cut off funds for the war or rescind authority. The people may not—ever—say that an election has produced a “mandate” ordering the president to do something different.

So to you libs who claim Bush is ignoring the election results…poppycock. Constitutionally, he’s on solid ground. And the lily-livered Dems you put in office know this.”

In other words, Congress can cut off the funds, to be sure. But a “Congressional mandate” against a war is a chimera.

    COgirl…great post…

    I agree with Big Mo…

Even some of the Republicans who returned to DC after the 2006 election think the Democrats won because of Iraq…

The Dems won…only because the GOP lost…

And the GOP lost because they were ’spinless’ on every issue from Sandy Berger, to Supreme Court Nominees, to Valarie Plame…(and it actually started as far back as Janet Reno–Waco & Elian Gonzalez)…

    But…

What Congress did today (and has been doing) is exactly what WE said would happen…

Cut the $$$–tie the hands of our Military Men and Women–do everything in THEIR Power to insure that Iraq becomes another Viet Nam before the 2008 election…

    Well…this is War…

The Office of Congressman Walter Jones (R), 3rd NC, just got an ear-full from me…

I’ll be calling the White House in a couple of minutes…

It was great to see GW ‘cowboy-up’, and call the US Congress on this issue…it’s also about time…

The President needs to keep the pressure on these guys…

    Iran is watching…hoping..and planning…

I actually hope that the Dumbocrats keep up with these kinds of foolhardy efforts . . . as it only further lays the groundwork for the GOP not only re-taking Congress, but retaining The White House.

Please run Fred Thompson …. PLEASE !!!!

    An Act Of Political Theatre

Pelosi was able to add enough pork (cough…earmarks…cough) to push through a bill that was, as Bush described, nothing but an act of political theater.  House Democrats called for a new direction in Iraq on Friday, passing a measure ordering…
