Fred Thompson - Who He Is

There’s been a lot written lately about the prospect of Fred Thompson running for president. He’s an exciting prospect. A smart man with a very interesting background. I thought it would be interesting to know a little bit more about the man — was he an actor first or a Senator? I didn’t know. So here’s the background from Wikipedia, Fred Dalton Thompson.

Thompson graduated in 1967 with a J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School. He has an undergraduate degree in philosophy and political science. He was admitted to the Tennessee bar upon graduation and served as a U.S. attorney for 3 years. He was the campaign manager for Howard Baker in 1972 and later served as co-chief counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee.

A turning point for Thompson was in 1977 when he was involved in a case that ultimately convicted Democrat governor Ray Blanton of selling pardons. A book was written about the case and in 1985 a movie titled Marie, he starred as himself. His acting career was launched.

Thompson won an election in 1994 to fill the remaining Senate term of Algore. He was re-elected in 1996 and chose not to run in 2002. He served as chair of the Committee on Governmental Affairs from 1997 to January 3, 2001. For a look at his voting record while in the Senate, check out Red State Kids. Suffice it to say that he is a staunch conservative who opposes abortion and same sex marriage, but strongly supports school choice vouchers, gun rights and higher military spending.

I like what he has to say. Check out the link in Newton’s post here. He’s a smart guy who sees the Democratic anti-war crowd as the surrender monkeys they are. I hope he decides to run.

I wrote to a friend recently that Thompson has the following benefits:
*His name isn’t Clinton or Bush
*He can say nuclear (check it out in Hunt for Red October)
    *He is articulate and succinct
*He could say “shut up” and the surrender caucus would shut up -which would probably bring in the annoyed moderates.
*He can sweep the South - which means he need only snag a few out of the following: PA, OH, MO, CO, WI. With both PA and OH - he’s in.

The three front runners are too wobbly for me. I hope his campaign gets going soon - and I for one intend to send money the second that I hear it has.
