WASHINGTON (AP) - When President Bush signs a bill authorizing 700 miles of new fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border Thursday, he’ll give GOP candidates a pre-election platform for asserting they’re tough on illegal immigration. Yet the centerpiece of his immigration policy, a guest worker program, remains stalled in Congress.
And a handful of House Republicans are at the brakes, blocking negotiations with the Senate for a bill that includes the president’s proposal.
Still, Bush argues that it would be easier to get his guest worker program passed if Republicans keep their majorities in the House and Senate after the Nov. 7 elections. (emphasis mine)
It’s great that President Bush is signing the border fence bill, eventhough he had to be dragged kicking and screaming. But, remember, this moment was made possible because of the House republicans STRONG stand on the issue. Another great reason why we MUST keep the House and Senate in GOP hands.
Update: With the president’s signature at 9:40 AM, the Secure Fence Act of 2006 became law. This is a fantastic issue for Republicans to run on - especially considering the large number of Democrtas who didn’t vote for it.

I’m hoping this ends some of the sniping from the right - we have the House to thank that this passed, remember the Senate was rubberstamping GWB’s amnesty bill…
We must keep the House!!! It’s the one truly conservative body. There are far too many RINOs in the Senate.
