Hold Up On The Fence Security Act
For those concerned about the immigration issue and are wondering why there’s no news on the Fence, Captain’s Quarters has the answer.
I took a few minutes at my lunch break to contact a senior staffer on the Hill who has worked the immigration issue. He told me that, as some CQ commenters had speculated, Congress has not formally sent the bill to the President. That means the clock has not started for his signature. The 10-day period starts only after Congress formally prints and delivers the bill for the President to sign into law.
If you want to know why there is a hold up - and before you start doubting President Bush and the Congress, go read what Capt. Ed has to say.

I was never worried about it as I thought that’s what the hold up was.. There are some conservatives just going nuts over it, it will get done and they should stop worrying..

Kathy, I’ve added the list of those who voted against this bill. I think it’s important for people to know where their representatives and senators stand on this issue.

Thanks COgirl - great addition!
Apparently Kossites are having a great big laugh at our expense - they spread the rumor about a pocket veto and watched as conservatives panicked.
There will be no pocket veto.

Good job COgirl

I definitely understand why the Diaz-Balarts and Ross-Lehtinen voted against the bill.
Their Congressional districts are mainly populated by the Cuban-American consituency. Remember what has been going on since Fidel Castro took power, and how many Cubans risk their lives daily to cross the 90 miles into Florida to seek political asylum. And remember those who never got to breathe freedom in the States, but became fish food instead.
Think about it. It’s a whole different story.

Kathy, great post and very smart move by the GOP to maximize the impact.
The MSM will try to drag Foleygate across the finish line, but the legs on that old story just ain’t that long.
Waiting to sign the Secure Fence Act until the last week or so of the campaign is brilliant!

About that border fence
A comment or two about that 700 mile fence that may, or may not, get built along the U.S.- Mexico border. This is a token gesture from politicians who are afraid of getting voted out of office. It’s like offering
