Olmert Caves and the UN Sells Out

This is so disappointing.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The U.N. Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution Friday that calls for an end to the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, and authorizes the deployment of 15,000 U.N. peacekeepers to help Lebanese troops take control of south Lebanon as Israel withdraws.

But wait, there’s more.

At the heart of the resolution are two elements: It seeks an immediate halt to the fighting that began July 12 when Hezbollah militants kidnapped two Israeli troops along the Blue Line, the U.N.-demarcated border separating Israel; and it spells out a series of steps that would lead to a permanent cease-fire and long-term solution.

That would be done by creating a new buffer zone in south Lebanon “free of any armed personnel, assets and weapons other than those of the government of Lebanon and UNIFIL” - the acronym of the U.N. force deployed in the region since 1978. The force now has 2,000 troops; the resolution would expand it to a maximum of 15,000.

So let me get this straight. Two thousand U.N blue helmets couldn’t get the job done in southern Lebanon so now we’re gonna send in 15,000? Anyone care to take bets on how long this will last? Oh well, they should make great targets for Hezbollah since the Hezboes aren’ t signatories to the resoltion.

(Sigh!) Why can’t we just fight wars the way we used to circa 1940s? Let one side win, THEN work out the terms of peace. Is it really harder to do that these days?

I was afraid this would happen. What happens to the kidnapped soldiers? As you pointed out Falcon, Hezbollah is not a signatory and they took the soldiers.

It is very disappointing - and did I mention that I hate the UN?

    Well I do.

The outcome of this will be that more innocents will die, not less.

I was reading in a paper last night (forget which one) that Olmert is catching it politically from the Israeli people who want Hezbully taken care of and their soldiers returned. I wonder when there will be a vote of no-confidence and a stronger party put in? He has no military leadership experience and, unlike Golda Meir, was not around to make a difference in the creation of the state of Israel.

Here’s the link to the story I mentioned above.
