Bush Addresses NAACP Convention
I reported the other day that President Bush had decided to address the NAACP annual convention after declining for a number of years. Here’s the Fox News reporting. Bush Pledges Signature on Voting Rights Act Renewal . I have also read the AP story and I can find no reports of any protests or booing during his address. I am glad that I was proven wrong.
President Bush offered unrestrained support Thursday for renewing the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
“I thank the members of the House of Representatives for reauthorizing the Voting Rights Act. Soon, the Senate will take up the legislation. I look forward to the Senate passing this bill promptly, without amendment so I can sign it into law,” Bush said.
I hope that this is just the first of many steps to bridge the gap between Blacks in this country and the GOP. I think much of the distrust can be attributed to a lack of understanding of Republican principles.
UPDATE The Senate passed the Voting Rights Act, 98-0, today. It should be on it’s way to the President’s desk. This was such a no-brainer!

Feels good to get the last word in and to be right, doesn’t it?

Not so much feeling “good”, but some pride that he was treated with the respect he deserves. Unfortunately, a negative reception would be seen as a negative reflection on my race. That is not confined to Blacks. Some of you are subject to negative sterotypes because you live in the South and then there are those “Yankees” from Vermont………

But David, you left out Chicago!
Rory! ACLU - never. I doubt even Gonzales would speak there.

Pssh!
At least we can all agree Bush speaking at ACLU convention would be a bad idea, right?

Oh yea, Rory. If President Bush ever accepted an invitation to speak to the ACLU, he should be looking for a new Chief of Staff! Apparently, this is the first time he spoke to the NAACP so I was worried.

DavidM, he spoke to them in 2000!

I’m glad President Bush spoke so eloquently to the NAACP. Now if they’d just get rid of Julian Bond and hire some pro-growth, pro-real advancement leadership, I might actually consider joining.

Falcon, if the NAACP had leadership like you and David, it would be like Jesus throwing the moneylenders out of the temple; you guys would DO something rather than try to maintain a status quo in order to keep your constituency.
That would be a novel approach.
Betsy’s page has some great commentary here which agrees with you.
